The Bible is referred to as the Word of God because He wrote it, He inspired it. We often consider Hebrew and Greek to be the first written languages of our Bible, but really before that ever happened it was first written in the heart of God.
Here the Lord Jesus is referred to as the Word, He is God, He is a person of the Godhead. We communicate with words and the wonderful thing is God has communicated to us, He has revealed who He is. He has done this in creation, in His word the Bible and the greatest revelation is the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible says that God has spoken to us in these last days in His Son (Hebrews 1:2).
The Bible tells us of the Lord Jesus, He can be seen from Genesis to Revelation. The word of God says He made the world (John 1:3, Colossians 1:16), so we should be able to see something of Him when we look at it because it is His handiwork; it has His hand and signature upon it. It says He is the upholder of all things (Hebrews 1:3), it says in Him all things consist and are held together (Colossians 1:17). So it is no wonder we read in John 1:4, “in Him was life”.
The Lord Jesus is also referred to here as light, in v7 the “true light”. The Bible states God is light (1John 1:5), He is pure and holy and the Lord Jesus reveals the beauty and glory of God to us. While He was here on earth He said “I am the light of the world”. We know the sinfulness and wickedness of this world, it is a dark place but there is One who is untainted, pure light; darkness cannot overcome Him. It’s lovely to see Him as the creator, the sustainer, the life giver, the true light; the One who cannot, did not and will not sin. The most precious truth is that it is this lovely person that came into this world from heaven to save sinners. He went to the cross at Calvary and tasted death for every man. What a glorious thing it is to take God at His word and know what it is to have believed in the person and finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ, enjoying Him as a personal Saviour.
Jesus said "I am the Light of the world"
John Ch 8 v 12
The Lord Jesus claimed to be the "Light of the world" He could say
"He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life"
The darkness that the Bible speaks of is SIN.
Only when we trust in Jesus as our Saviour can we 'walk in the light'.
The Lord Jesus is the Light of the world because He is the only one who can take away the darkness.
When He died upon the cross at Calvary He took the judgement for our sin.
By trusting in Him we can have our sin forgiven and 'walk in the light'.
